Breaking the I-5 Pipeline: Oregon's Fight Against Sex Trafficking with Brittany Jones (Ep. 321)
In a compelling two-part interview on Voices for VoicesⓇ, gubernatorial candidate Brittany "BJ" Jones outlined her vision for Oregon's future, with particular emphasis on combating human trafficking and improving mental health services across the state. As someone running for Oregon Governor in 2026, Jones brings a unique perspective shaped by her own experiences with homelessness as a veteran and her previous presidential campaign.
One of the most striking aspects of Jones' platform is her approach to addressing human trafficking along the I-5 corridor, which she identifies as one of the worst locations in the nation for this crime. Rather than focusing on prosecuting victims, as has historically been the case, Jones advocates for a system where victims can come forward without fear of criminal prosecution. This approach would shift resources toward pursuing perpetrators and implementing safety checks along highways. Jones expressed that offenders should receive maximum penalties in all cases, asserting that current punishments amount to little more than "a slap on the wrist" for heinous crimes against women, men, and children.
Jones also highlighted the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), noting how jurisdictional issues between federal, state, and tribal authorities often prevent justice for indigenous communities. She explained that even when crimes occur off reservations, authorities frequently claim it's not their jurisdiction, while tribal communities lack the resources and permissions to develop infrastructure for protecting their people. As governor, Jones pledged to enforce indigenous treaties that have historically been violated by the United States government, ensuring these agreements are honored as they should have been from the beginning.
Mental health reform represents another cornerstone of Jones' platform. Drawing from personal experience with her son, who has attenuated psychosis syndrome, Jones shared a successful model from an Elkton school that replaced principals with licensed counselors. Students who would typically be sent to the principal's office for disciplinary reasons instead met with counselors to discuss the root causes of behavioral issues. This approach led to significant improvements in both behavior and academic performance. Jones believes this model should become the standard across all schools, providing children with immediate mental health resources during formative years.
Perhaps most remarkable about Jones' candidacy is her commitment to funding initiatives personally if legislative approval isn't forthcoming. Having lived on $12,000-20,000 annually for most of her life, Jones views the governor's salary as an opportunity to directly fund programs she believes in, particularly her homelessness initiative. This extraordinary pledge demonstrates a level of personal investment rarely seen in political candidates. As Jones herself put it, she's "not afraid to lose her couch" if it means creating meaningful change for Oregonians.
If elected, Jones plans to immediately declare a state of emergency to address homelessness, the MMIW crisis, ongoing indigenous genocide, and the drug epidemic. This declaration would give her directive control over state agencies, including law enforcement, allowing her to allocate resources more effectively for investigations and community safety rather than targeting vulnerable populations. She also intends to prevent ICE from detaining people in Oregon or extraditing them, citing human rights concerns with current immigration enforcement practices.
Jones represents a candidate who has experienced many of the challenges facing ordinary Oregonians. From homelessness to operating small businesses through difficult economic times, her perspective is grounded in lived experience rather than theoretical policy positions. Her campaign offers a vision of government that prioritizes protection for the vulnerable, accountability for wrongdoers, and accessible mental health services for all citizens, particularly the youngest Oregonians who stand to benefit most from early intervention.
