With Oregon's Future at Stake, Meet Brittany Jones (Ep. 320)
Brittany "BJ" Jones is not your typical political candidate. As a human trafficking survivor, military veteran, and passionate advocate for children's futures, she brings a unique perspective to her campaign for governor of Oregon in 2026. In a recent interview, Jones shared insights into her background, motivation for entering politics, and vision for Oregon's future.
Born and raised in Oregon, Jones has deep roots in the state she hopes to lead. Though she has moved away several times, she always returns, explaining simply, "This is home for me." Her childhood was enriched by both her indigenous heritage and Mexican culture. While not enrolled in any Oregon tribe, Jones identifies as Patawamik, an indigenous group from Virginia. She describes growing up participating in powwows, ceremonies, and cultural gatherings, though these experiences were interrupted when her mother entered the workforce to support the family. As an adult, Jones has reconnected with her indigenous roots and maintains regular contact with her relatives in Virginia.
Jones's political awakening was gradual. Her first voting experience in the military opened her eyes to the political process, but it was Donald Trump's presidential campaign that truly catalyzed her interest. "If anyone like that can run for office, we really got to start paying attention," she reflected. This realization prompted her to run for president as her first political venture—an ambitious start that she acknowledges was a "steep learning hole." Though running as a Democrat for governor, she maintains future presidential aspirations, citing concerns about the direction of the country and her desire to protect children's futures.
Protection of children emerges as a central theme in Jones's platform. She articulates a multifaceted approach that includes making schools safer, addressing gun violence, improving mental health resources, and following indigenous leadership for environmental stewardship. "Our children deserve to have clean water to play in and drink, and forests to be able to go and explore," she explains. Jones also emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for children to express their identities without fear of repercussion, specifically mentioning transgender and BIPOC children.
Despite her passion for these issues, Jones doesn't fit the stereotypical politician mold. She describes herself as an introvert who prefers "to just be in my corner with my books and candles." However, she finds that her anxiety dissipates when speaking about issues she's passionate about. Her first major public speech occurred at a Labor Day protest at the Salem capital, where she spoke without preparation but was proud that she "didn't say 'um' or have long pauses." Jones emphasizes the importance of having a supportive team that can help introverted candidates navigate the social aspects of campaigning.
Jones runs a grassroots campaign without the extensive resources of established politicians. She works as a DoorDash driver to maintain a flexible schedule for campaign activities while balancing parenting responsibilities for her school-aged daughter. Her campaign relies on a small group of volunteers who meet weekly to plan strategy and events. This approach aligns with her authentic, down-to-earth political style that focuses on connecting with voters around shared concerns rather than polished messaging.
