In a recent episode of Voices for VoicesⓇ, host Justin Alan Hayes and guest David Solomon delved into troubling revelations about certain Christian fantasy writing conferences that may be putting children at risk. The conversation centered around Realm Makers, an organization that presents itself as a Christian conference for fantasy writers but, according to Solomon, has increasingly strayed from its supposed Christian foundations.
David Solomon, a human trafficking survivor and advocate, shared his firsthand experience with the organization and certain individuals associated with it. His testimony painted a disturbing picture of what he describes as "wolves in sheep's clothing" – people who use Christian platforms to gain access to children and families while promoting content that contradicts Christian values. Solomon expressed particular concern about Realm Makers' choice of guest speakers, specifically highlighting the creator of League of Legends, a game that features themes of transgenderism, feminism, homosexuality, and even depicts Satan as a positive character.
The conversation highlighted what Solomon and Hayes identified as a dangerous bait-and-switch tactic: families spend significant money to attend what they believe is a Christian conference, only to be exposed to content and speakers that promote very different values. "These individuals, having gone to many conferences myself, if I showed up to a keynote speaker expecting a particular topic and that speaker turned out to be a 180 degree of that, that would make me very, very, very upset," Hayes explained, emphasizing how families are being misled after spending their hard-earned money.
Solomon also raised serious concerns about specific individuals associated with Realm Makers, including Bryan Davis and Von Ohlman, whom he accused of inappropriate behavior toward minors. He described how predatory relationships can begin innocuously – through an author giving their card to a young aspiring writer – before gradually escalating to increasingly inappropriate communications. "That's how it starts, parents... that email's power, that's the door," Solomon warned, describing how initial contact can lead to dozens of messages and calls.
Perhaps most concerning were Solomon's allegations that some of these authors are working to get their books into school curriculums across multiple states, potentially extending their influence beyond conferences and directly into educational materials. He specifically mentioned that some books are already required reading in homeschool curriculums in Florida, Texas, and Virginia, with Ohio potentially on the horizon. The interview suggested that meetings with political figures like the Governor of Ohio might be aimed at furthering these curriculum goals.
The discussion also touched on the true purpose of Christian writing, which Solomon believes should be about leading people to God rather than leading them astray. "What makes us different from secular creators is that we are anointed with the word of God in our hands, in our minds, in our mouth," Solomon stated passionately, emphasizing that Christian writers have a "responsibility, dignity and honor to the gift that God has given us."
As the episode concluded, both Hayes and Solomon called for accountability not just from the organization and individuals involved, but also from hotels, convention centers, and political figures who provide platforms for these events without adequate vetting. The message was clear: parents, law enforcement, and people in positions of power need to be vigilant about protecting children from those who might exploit faith-based platforms for harmful purposes.
